Bad movie FX are high up on the list of my favorite things. I’m talkin’ 90’s CGI punching far above its weight class, animatronic suits, puppets, slime and anything to do with ‘cyberspace’. I love it all. I appreciate the missteps and overconfidence they had then. Nowadays, we use CGI to remove Superman’s mustache. That was an objectively bad onetoo. The FX in this list are far more enjoyable.

Lawnmower Man

These scenes are so righteous. The graphics are almost like a cross between Morrowind and the CGI from a mid 90’s cereal commercial. Just awesome. And naturally, if you’re logging onto the internet, as soon as “you’re in” you’ve GOTTA say, “I’m in”. And speaking of saying, “I’m in”…

Johnny Mnemonic

Wooooooo DOGGY Johnny M&M Hooked-on-Phonics is a good time. Keanu killing it again with the cold hard serious professional persona. You gotta love the “Cyberspace” era, where everyone thought we’d be VRing the internet. And I mean, while they weren’t wrong, not many of us do this, and it’s no where near as cool as this in real life.

Theodore Rex

Whoopi Goldberg has done it all. From slapstick nun to Star Trek and beyond. But she’s also had an anthropomorphic dinosaur as a no-nonsense (or all nonsense rather) beat cop side kick. The animatronic dinosaur costume rules plenty, but the real ticket in this clip is the muppet puppet in the bag. We just need more puppets in general, especially of the wise-guy variety.

Dr. Mordrid

I could watch stop motion creatures fight each other ALL day. Old Godzilla, Land of the Lost and the old Clay Fighter games (seriously, go check that out right now if you don’t know what I’m talking about).

Super Mario Brothers

While I feel like all of the entries on this list could have an article of their own, this one might take the cake. I’d say most people 30 and older know alllllll about it. It’s without a doubt the most nonsensical video game adaptation movie ever made. I understand that at the time Mario didn’t provide much in the way of backstory, and they had to embellish a bit. But they just embellished a lot. Why are the Goomba’s reptiles? Why do they morph guys with cool hair into them? Why are their heads so small and their bodies so large? I don’t know, I just don’t know. I’m not the person to ask.

This is hardly the tip of the dang iceberg. Do y’all have any favorite bad FX moments? Comment below!
